Psychosis, directed by Reg Travis, is a crime/horror/mystery story stars Charisma Carpenter as the appropriately blonde Sudan Golden.
It starts way back in 1992 when a group of young and rather stupid anarchists set out into the snowy wilderness to try to stop the construction of a new motorway bypass. After all, these things do spoil the countryside a bit. Naturally, as with any group of happy and motivated young people in a movie like this, a horrific fate awaits them and they are never to be seen again. You can guess that there’s going to be some sort of residual “bad” left over however and you’d be right as Susan discovers when, fifteen years after the event, she decides inexplicably to move from California to England. She’s trying to find peace and quiet to continue her writing and while the idea seems good on paper, very soon she is regretting her decision big time. It doesn’t help that she has her newlywed husband with her and that there is a terrifying nightmare waiting for them both.
Charisma Carpenter lives up to her name and does well with the character of Susan, someone who starts off as confident and arrogant, verging on somewhat arch, and who’s confidence is torn away from them by a series of incidents from a world beyond their imaginings. By the end, she is a nervous wreck in a mental institution and Carpenter brings off this dramatic transformation with a great deal of skill, which helps the movie as a whole as so much hinges on her performance. The supporting cast range from good to bad to awful, though it’s always great to see the vastly underrated Bernard Kay in something these days. Reg Travis direction is, to put it mildly, wayward. In some scenes, his handling is masterful, but when confronted with slasher attacks and the depiction of violence, he seems to falter, as if not quite sure how best to present the material, perhaps a fault in the editing rather than in the direction itself, but it makes for a strangely jerky movie going experience.
One to enjoy with a few mates and a few beers.
