Jack Falls

Coming right up to date, this movie was released in 2011 and is a low budget British crime drama from directors Paul Tanter and Alexander Williams, from a script by Tanter. And it’s pretty textbook stuff in which ex policeman Jack Adleth returns to his hometown ofLondonseeking revenge against those who tried to have him murdered inAmsterdam.

Starring Simon Philips as Jack, with good support from the likes of Jason Flemying, Tamer Hassan, Olivia Hallinan and Dexter Fletcher, its shot very much in the style of a low budgetSinCity, black and white with the occasional splash of colour. While this trick was original and worked very well in the former film, here it seems a little derivative, reducingLondonto a collection of shady and seedy night time scenes. Not that it isn’t well shot and it does certainly have a distinctive look, but there is a general feeling of “seen it all before”, especially as the characters all appear to have walked straight out of a Guy Ritchie movie. In a way it’s a shame the director opted for such a stylised way of shooting as there’s a lot of good in the script and some of the performances are excellent though many of them are a little uneven.

Not to say that the script is perfect either, it’s an adaptation of a graphic novel and in places it sags and the plot becomes a little muddied. However the direction does compliment and suggest that comic book feel with a lot of split screen moments being used to suggest the panels of that particular media. Dexter Fletcher, Martin Kemp and Alan Ford are all at the top of their game here putting some great and intense performances and Jason Flemying is always great in whatever he appears in so there’s a bonus right there. There are also some tremendous action sequences including one towards the middle of the film that is genuinely involving and thrilling. As revenge dramas go, this is a midrange movie with some nice stylish touches and rounds off its trilogy well. Though it may not be to everyone’s taste it is well worth a watch.

  1. I saw a trailer and liked the look of it. My wife bought the 3 box set. I have watched the first 2, they were awful. The second slightly better of the two, I do hope this is better.

I think my biggest mistake was to stay awake and focused on the screen. Maybe Jack falls will be better enjoyed if I put it on and take the dogs for a walk. That’s not a euphemism or rhyming slang either … could be tricky timing it so I just get back for the end credits though.
