Irish comedian Ed Byrne moves into acting for this quirky comedy about a man who seems to suffer from every obsessive compulsive disorder there is. John Davies, is a TV writer and when his stunningly attractive girlfriend leaves him, he turns his obsessions towards supermodel Veronika Zemanova. And being as he is ridden with his disorders, his obsession is a little more than you would expect from most people. Soon he is genuinely stalking the model on the internet and descending into a strange world of semi madness in which his fingers talk to him (brilliant cameos by Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer as the voices of the fingers here)
Byrne is brilliant as Davies, relishing the chance to show that he has real, acting talent as well as being a funny comedian. He really brings the character to life, making him real and sometimes even sympathetic as well as laugh out loud funny. Georgina Chapman is also great as Jenna and Ralf Little manages to impress as Kev. Jayson Rothwell as director does a very good job with limited resources and gets the most out of the comedy inherent ion the script. It’s very much a character piece and Davies is a great character, one who must have been as much fun to write as to play. His journey as he tries to conquer his old obsessions, only to replace them with his newest is cracklingly funny and there is some tremendous dialogue, including Davies little “truisms” that he chunters out from time to time, all numbered, of course.
With an underlying message about how the internet has revolutionised personal communication, while also demonstrating that there can be a disturbing edge to that empowerment, as Davies becomes more and more obsessed with printing out pictures of Zemanova and plastering his wall with them. It’s cheap and cheerful, with a wide cynical grin that is exactly what you would expect from a low budget, very British comedy. Absolutely worth seeing and it stands up well to repeated viewings with a freshness to the comedy and a standout central character who will probably become a cult over the years. Ninety minutes of laughs.
